Zombicide!: El Cholo Zombivore

Hello all,
Blood and Gore! My favourite character of Zombicide! finally gets a Zombivore version. And it is one of the most gruesome versions yet. He appears to have stabbed himself numerous times with his throwing knives (some are still stuck in his head, and back).

Zombicide, Zombie, Survivor, Zombivore, El Cholo, painted

A brilliant mini, as always, from Guillotine Games - he looks the Zombie part. Actually, based on my observations, he is one of the traditional zombie sculpts (as opposed to the toxic Zombivores (i.e., the Samurai with his postules) and the berserker zombies (i.e., Nick the cop)). Will have to explore this some more in a later post.

Zombiecide Storage Crisis Solved - Cheap Storage Solution from Sally 4th

Hello all,
So, the lucky bastards who were part of the Kickstarter Season One for Zombicde got app. 200 miniatures out of the deal. Now, this is actually something of a mixed blessing - 200 miniatures, the majority of which are zombies, is a lot of minis to paint. And then, once you've painted the buggers, it dawns on you that you need to store that bazillion of zombies and the hefty amount of survivors. And with the minis from Season two arriving shortly the problem will only be doubled.
Now, not to cry about having a massive amount of painted minis, but where and how do you store so many minis? And in a manner wherein you can quickly get them out and not spend the entire evening wrapping them in papertowel or figuring out which one goes where in your expensive styrofoam carrying case?
Well, I believe I've found the answer to this question. Allow me to praise a product made by a British company called Sally 4th.
Not a bad name either :-).
This company produces a fair few things, but the thing that caught my eye was their line of Figure Storage Chests. This is a line of laser cut wooden 'chests' that come in a variety of sizes and heights. And the best thing is that they also produce inserts, tailored to just about every basing system out there.
So I went and did the only reasonable thing - I bought a few samples just to test them out and this is the result:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

With room for 48 models in their 25mm round insert cutouts, all the survivors and zombivores will fit within one chest, and have room to practice their Zombie-slaying-tricks as well.
I've bought the 75mm heigh version and have opted for the magnetic inlay as well. this works perfect for the plastic minis, but for metal minis I would go easy on the travelling. Meaning they will stay in place while travelling, but if someone turns them upside down, they will fall down half the time.
A few examples of the zombie horde tucked away in their chests:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

A ton of Walkers, ready to party.

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

And, in another chest, a hefty group of fatties and some runners for support.
As you can see, three chests will fit more than the basic set (and even the Abomination pack), and as it only takes a second to stow away a given mini (or pull out a handfull of Runners to ruin everyones day) I do believe this is the currently best answer to how one can stow the Zombicide minis.
And four chests will only take up a small amount of shell space as they are fully stackable:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

Now I did a little bit of modification before I assembled the chests - just to make the sets seem more urbannish:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

A quick grey spray, and the inserts share the 'dark asphalt' look I've used on my Zombicide bases. Makes the entire thing seem more fitting. And I plan to go back and both add a bit of blood splatter and some clutter once I get more time.
More examples of minis in the Sally 4th storage chests:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

Now there are a few caveats with this system.
1: The entire thing comes without any instructions and looks quite fragile when you get the set. The mess below are six chests and two lids:

Sally, 4th, forth, Storage, crisis, miniatures, cheap, wood, zombies, zombicide, survivors, safe

Looks a bit daunting. But once you get started the things build themselves and it was a bit like building wooden planes as a child.

2. the smell. Now becuase these are cut by a laser they smell. They smell burnt and they will do so for some time. Mine have been in action for a few weeks and I'll still notice the smell once in a while. But in the beginning the smell is quite noticeable, and the room you store them in will smell like a 'cub scout'-hangout. Very smokey - not like a cigarette, but like burnt wood. Whether this is a significant problem is something you must decide for yourself, but for me it was like reliving my childhood, so I came to enjoy the smell, even though it surprised me.

3. the price. While very fairly priced (I believe each chest, with magnets and inserts) set me back ca. 8£ is by any standard not a lot, it is money not used on miniatures and, again, is a point worth considering. I pondered long and hard (well for a day or so) and finally decided that the convenience they offered was worth it, and the quality of the product is great - well designed and flawless executed.

Now, I really like the products from Sally 4th (including their cheap round bases with magnets, excellent priced) and thus I happily recommend them for solving the problem of storing any minis. I'll be buying a few more chests and inserts for use with my Warmaster 10mm miniatures - four chests should hold vast armies and wills tandardize my storage system (and free up a lot of the wife's kitchen containers...).

Zombicide! Eagle Chaz Survivor and Zombivore (updated with blood and gore)

Hello all,
An updated Eagle Chaz Zombivore and Survivor version - now with blood and gore :-)

Designer's note on Eagle Chaz
"I hate killing but I’ll make an exception. Being the good guy doesn’t mean being nice!"
Eagle Chaz is THE man. He fought crime and evil. He fought for freedom, he stood for the weak against the powerful. He knows how to use guns but his body is his best weapon. Usually, Eagle Chaz doesn’t want to kill, unless he has no other choice. He is a THE good guy. Well, zombies aren’t really people, so let’s just call it target practice.

Hello all,
It appears that this wee blog has steadily over the course of the last four months climbed to more than 40.000 hits. That calls for a party, and our bold survivors have thus gathered all the hottest Zombie babes out there in order to spiffen up the party a bit :-).

Zombicide, babe, sexy, hot, zombie

Anyways, thanks for all your visits, comments, and interest - I hope you'll keep coming back and remember, there is always room for more followers and comments are dearly appreciated.

 Zombicide, babe, sexy, hot, zombie

Over the next month I'll be posting on how to solve the troublesome storage issue with more than 200 zombies, group shots of all the finished Zombies, Survivors, and Zombivores from Season One.

For some reason, these zombies look more like robots infected with a virus :-)

Zombicide!: Cardboard Tube Samurai Zombivore painted

Hello all,
Better have the Zombivore version of the Cardboard Tube Samurai featured as well :-).
As in the case of the survivor version (can be seen here) this is a pretty great mini - good detail and a face full of expressions. More blood and gore on this guy as befits his Zombivore status.

Zombicide Survivor Zombie Zombivore painted Cardboard Tube Samurai
Interesting fact: as with Chaz, this Zombivore seems to have caught the contation and shows clear postules (on his left shoulder). Guess he is turning into a toxic version?

Zombicide!: Cardboard Tube Samurai Survivor

Hello all,
Another Survivor done! This time it is the mysterious Cardboard Tube Samurai. Now while I have no idea who this internet character really is, the mini brought a lot of extra support for the season one Kickstarter of Zombicide. So, I guess we should be grateful for the dude. Yet, it seems really odd to have a character armed with a piece of cardboard fighting Zombies. Might be the only weapon which is less functional than a pan...
The mini is actually great - one of the best faces in the bunch. A lot of character. The rest will make you regret ever deciding to open a yellow tube of paint. The black border meant plenty of yellow on black paint afterwards which may be the most difficult touch up to do.
The only thing that could have done with a bit more detail is his japanese hat on his back.

Zombicide Survivor Zombie Zombivore painted Cardboard Tube Samurai
As his Zombivore version is very similar to this model, I decided to keep the blood and gore to a bare minimum, in order to better differentiate between the two.

Compared to the 'original' it looks alright:

Zombicide!: Zombivore Dave the Geek

Hello all,
Another Zombivor joins the pack: Dave the Geek has had a really bad day - no more Baziiinga for him.

Zombicide Zombie Survivor Zombivor Dave the Geek Sheldon
Not the best of the season one survivors game play wise, as his special skill is so situational, but a brilliant miniature nonetheless. He has even kept his light saber, just in case he figures out how to use it :-).

As I found his survivor version to need a little something special for his t-shirt (the Green Lantern superhero sign) I had to replicate it for the yellow canary (so-called because his sculpt is so yellow before paint that it is almost impossible to discern any details :-)). I really wish I was a better painter, but hey he is done :-).

Zombicide Zobie Survivor Zombivor Dave the Geek Sheldon
The flames engulfing his right hand are nicely sculpted but the how-to of painting such a minute area of flames made me put him at the back of the que for some time. In the end I just decided to give it a try and it seems alright to me :-).

Zombicide Zobie Survivor Zombivor Dave the Geek Sheldon
The designer's brief on Dave reads:

"Yeah sure, take the shotgun if you want, I'll take the... AMMONIUM... NITRATE!"
As far as he remembers, Dave always found reality to be terribly boring. So he locked himself up in an imaginary world and learned piles of useless stuff... useless until now. Dave is a fount of knowledge. His chemistry mastery makes him look like a superhero amongst other survivors. At least until he opens this mouth, then everyone remembers he's a real geek.

Skills:

  • Blue / 2 cocktails are better than 1
  • Yellow / +1 Action
  • Orange A / +1 re-roll per turn
  • Orange B / Slippery
  • Red A / +1 to dice roll: Ranged
  • Red B / +1 die: Ranged
  • Red C / Lucky

Zombicide!: Nick Walker (Bad Cop) Survivor and Zombivore

Hello all,
Another Zombivore and Survivor pair done. This time it is Nick Walker, the Bad Cop, who has had a very bad day.
Zombicide Nick Walker Bad Cop Zombivore Survivor Painted

Bruce Willis, sorry Nick Walker, is an easy paintjob, yet a very characteristic miniature and a pleasure to paint. The Zombivore version also paints itself more or less.
Interestingly there seems to be two types of Zombivores - those with pustules and those without. Zombivore Nick has none, and looks to be the most aggressive Zombievore - more like a werewolf than a zombie.

Zombicide Nick Walker Bad Cop Zombivore Survivor Painted

Designer's note on Nick the Cop:

"I do things by the book, my book!"
Lieutenant Nicholas Walker has sometimes been bad, and always been lucky. Corrupt and cocksure, Nick gets his man, anyway he can, even if it means doing things a normal cop wouldn’t do. Bluffing and bullying his way through the streets of New York, this highly decorated officer has put away hundreds of criminals and lined his pockets discreetly while he was at it.
Now, with no more crime and money meaningless, he desperately searches for his wife, rescuing and helping other survivors in the vain hope that someone has seen her.

Gameplay

• The best describing word for Nick is “reliable”. Enduring, fast and endowed with a versatile Skill tree, the bad cop has access to incredible career choices. From a game to another, he can be a silent killer, an officer or a high-class scout. Whatever the choices made, he’s a tough guy and can always endure the first wound he’s given. Besides the immediate gain of an increased endurance, this allows him to lock down the Abomination in the Zone he stands in and simply shrug off the damage it inflicts him every turn.
• Nick is ideally equipped with a ranged weapon in one hand and a melee weapon in the other. The Orange level Skill choice is crucial here. Slippery, he’ll go for a chainsaw and a Sub-MG. With an additional die in Combat, he’ll favor a rifle (or better, a sniper rifle) with an axe.
• Nick is a Swiss army knife who can block an access for some time. When playing in group, he’ll stand just in the corner of your eye, from where he can brutally change his strategy and give some help to an endangered friend. The priority is to quickly give Nick some good equipment: he’ll use it good and long.

Hasslefree Survivors: Maria (c) (HFA109)

Hello all,
Finished another of the excellent Hasslefree miniatures. This it was Maria (c) (HFA109), a very petite girl. Interesting pose, great details and a crisp sculpt made her a pleasure to paint.

Hasslefree Survivors: Bubba (HFA038)

Hello all,
As mentioned earlier, I recently bought a test sample of Hasslefree's miniatures. Just to check if the quality was really as good as it seemed from the internet pictures. And the quality was perhaps even better. The first chap I got to paint was the Elvis impersonator, Bubba (HFA038).

Hasslefree miniatures Zombicide alternate survivors paint Bubba Elvis
Bubba comes in three parts, probably because of his bulk, with each arm separate. A large man, there are few details on him apart from the ornate details on his chest and legs. An easy paintjob, fun, and a very charismatic mini. I'm actually quite happy with how he turned out - deadly guitar and all.
I didn't add any blood or gore to him as I wanted him to stand out from the Survivor crowd in his Sunday Whites.

Hasslefree miniatures Zombicide alternate survivors paint Bubba Elvis
Hasslefree's note on Bubba:
So is Elvis dead or not? Rumours abound that he didnt die and is making a living as an impersonator! Move over for the Elvis impersonating zombie hunter sporting a deadly guitar (!) and a 357 magnum.

One should definitely listen to the King's music while painting this chap.

Hasslefree Survivors: Mad-Dog the Nudist Fireman

Hello all,
Another of the brilliant models from Hasslefree Miniatures. I've never experienced models that were such a pleasure to paint (apart from the eyes - Tiny, Tiny I tell you!).
This chap, Mad-Dog, appears to be utterly thrilled by the Zompocalypse - as Happy as something very happy! Actually made me smile each time I looked at him :-).

Hasslefree, Zombicide, Mad-Dog, Dog, painted, survivor, alternative, HFA013

Shame I didnt capture his smile - he looks quite happy - you can just identify his smile if you click the picture above.

Hasslefree, Zombicide, Mad-Dog, Dog, painted, survivor, alternative

Hasslefree describes him thusly:
Mad-Dog is a suave and sophisticated Zombie hunter who unfortunately got caught 'with his trousers down'. We aren't implying that he was 'up to no good' but merely that when the thrill of the hunt calls, there are obviously more important things to think about than putting on your trousers! At least he remembered his fire-axe and his protective helmet although i am not sure what use they would be with a bunch of zombies approaching. He is approximately 28mm to eye level.

Hasslefree, Zombicide, Mad-Dog, Dog, painted, survivor, alternative

Not sure how sophisticated I think he looks but he is a happy fireman without the constrains of having to wear clothes.
