Zombicide! Download the rules for free

Hello all,
One of the things I love about smaller companies such as Guillotine Games is that they are not greedy. Being used to Games Workshop, who will attempt to suck every penny out of you, smaller game companies have a wonderful habit of just letting people play their game and being happy with whatever revenue they get along the way.

Zombicide!
In this case, Guillotine Games have made the (updated) rules for Zombicide! available for free online. That is awesome with a sprinkling of awesome-sauce on top. And makes me want to support them in any way I can, including this blog, which hopefully helps to spread the word about this great game!

Anyways, in case you did not know of the offer by Guillotine Games, here is the link -

Zombicide! Third Game: Car-crunching the Zombie Horde

Hello all,
Following the last, very unsuccessful, foray into the Zombie infested world our survivors regrouped and set out for a new mission. This time it would be the mission 06 The Escape. We chose this particular mission primarily becuase we wished to test out the rules for destroying zombies with cars. And we sure did chrunch the Zombie horde beneath our mighty wheels.

Zombicide! Killing Zombies with Cars rules
Zombicide! Car Chrunching Zombies
The game went well in the beginning; the mission revolves around searching for basic nesecities, stockpiling them inside one of the two cars and then getting the hell out of Dodge. We decided to head straight for the large building and start searching. On the way, we ramsacked the police car for weapons.
Although this provided most of the party with excellent weaponry, it also meant that all the cans of gasoline went into the used cards pile. This was rather unfortunate as it meant we would have little chance to produce the much needed Molotov Cocktails. As one of the survivor characters was Dave whose special rule (2 Cocktails are better than 1) means that he can produce two of these wonderful improvised grenades, there was much complaining and grinding of teeth.

Zombicide! gameplay using cars
An abomination decides to visit our Survivors
This did not improve when an Abomination did decide to turn up during one of the first turns, again!
So we decided to get sneaky.
One of the things we have learnt is that the Zombicide! rules allow for a somewhat controllable 'micro-management' of the Abomination. In the above situation, Dave (lower left corner) could entice the Abomination to come towards him for a couple of turns, before firing up the car and driving back around to the rest of the party. This meant that although we couldn't kill the beast, we could keep him under control for the majority of the game. So even though Dave's special ability was unusable, he effectively did remove the threat posed by the Abomination.

Zombicide! Survivors seraching cars franticly
After a few turns, Dave made his escape and plowed through a horde of Zombies on his way back to regroup. This meant that he killed enough Walkers in a simple drive-by to gain enough experience toe nter the Orange zone, while most other survivors were still in the blue zone. This could get nasty....

Zombicide! gameplay using cars
During the following turns, we couldn't find the needed supplies, and the zombie horde kept getting closer. Amy had to go inside the building to keep the Abomination occupied. Brave girl, that Goth psycopath...
Meanwhile Doug and Dave were busy sniping the walkers and macheting the Fatties that came too close to our designated search party.

And then, finally, we managed to locate the last bottles of water and blasted through the Zombie hordes in our two cars. Needless to say, very few zombies survived the experience and we made our escape succesfully. And we did so with no casualties. Not bad. And as always, much fun was had by all.

Regarding the Car rules of Zombicide! we are not completely sold. They are very powerful (at least against Walkers) and very quick. The entire problem of getting out of the mission was easy, as it only took a single turn of driving to exit the area (six tiles) and as such was almost too easy. And the cars did work very well in thinning the Zombie horde and killed most walkers on the way.
We'll give the cars a few more tries, and on larger maps and see if they work as intended.

If you happen to agree, disagree or be madly in love with me, please leave a comment or a tip :-). It really motivates all bloggers to keep blogging!

Zombicide! Official Zombivore rules posted

Hello all,
In anticipation of the supplement to Zombicide!, Toxic Mall, Guillotine Games have been sweet enough to offer previews of most of the new content. None of the new rules have been the subject of more rumour mongering than how they
ve handled the idea of the survivors returning to life as zombies. Or as zombivores, zombies with a strong enough will to sta on the 'good side'.
Well, monger no long because here are the finished rules:

Not sure about this rule, but I'll let GG have the benefit of the doubt and try it a few times before getting judgemental on them.

Zombicide! New Miniatures!

Hello all,
Guillotine Games are spoiling us with spoilers (.-)) of the new expansion to Zombicide!, Toxic Mall.
This time they've showed some more new miniatures. the level of detail is great and they look better than the original minis:
New Zombicide figures: Ned, Elsa, walker, Amy, and a toxic zombie

It appears to be Zombivor Ned,  a new character called Elsa, Walker Zombie, Zombivore Amy, and a toxic Walker.

Ned and Amy loook suitable angry, while Elsa looks like a pleasure to paint! The walker is more Zombie-like than the previous. The only one I'm not too sure about is the toxic zombie walker - does look a bit weird...

Not bad Guillotine, not bad at all!

All the best,
Kasper

Zombicide! New Rules for Toxic Mall!

Hello all,
In anticipation of the upcoming 'Toxic Mall', Guillotine Games has been showering us with new images. They've also (as the nice chaps they are) provided a few pages from the new rulebook.

Zombicide! New Rules for Toxic Mall
Pages 4 to 5 details the new toxic Zombies.
Introducing Pa's Pistol (only fair he gets one when there is the Ma's version :-)).
Now the nasty feature of the Toxic Zombies is that they have an ability called Toxic spray. This causes one wound on survivors when they are killed in the same zone. Very Nasty! Will make helping swarmed players much more difficult.
Zombicide! New Rules for Toxic Mall
Pages 6 to 7 has information on the toxic Abomination and Zombivores - zombie survivors...
Apparently the Zobivore characters - undead survivors, but with a free will - are tougher than normal (taking five wound cards to kill) but slower.
Toxic zombies are targeted before normal zombies.
Apparently the Toxic Abomination turns all zombies in its zone into toxic zombies. Bad news!

Not bad, click to enlarge and study the rules.

All the best,
Kasper

Zombicide! New Infected Elsa (Zombivore version)

Zombicide! New character: Raoul Zombivore

Hello all,
In anticipation of the upcoming 'Toxic Mall', Guillotine Games has been showering us with new images.
This is  the infected Raoul - apparently he gains experience from killing survivors... as if the zombies weren't scary enough :-).

I know what webbing does (allows you to keep an equipment card even though you are wounded) but Death Grasp and Rotten? Sounds serious :-)

Zombicide! Preview of Infected Josh

Hello all,
Guillotine Games have offered a few interesting previews of the upcoming supplement to Zombicide!.

The first is an image of the infected Josh:
Zombicide! The infected Josh Survivor Character

Apparently once infected he will still hunt zombies? (Source)

I've read that in the new edition, once a survivor dies, he or she will turn into a zombie. Considering Josh's dual sawn-off shotguns in the above image, this could cause serious troubles :-)

 Brilliant artwork, as always.

Kasper

Zombicide! Second Game - Abomination Problems

Hello all,
So we managed to get another game of the superb boardgame Zombicide! arranged. And once again, it was a blast even though things didn't go that well for our four survivors (Amy, Josh, Nick, and Phil).
The game mission was "05 Big W" and it looked pretty straight forward.
We decided our game plan would be to bust down a few doors and get a head start on the zombies.
Step one was quickly accomplished and everything looked sweet - a few walkers? Hah, we eat walkers for breakfast (or, wait, that would make us zombies, wouldn't it?). Anyways all looked good.

Zombicide! First turn and everything looks easy!
Well then it went bad. Really bad.
The first spawn of zombies, and what did we manage to draw? Well nothing less than a bleeding, terrifying Abomination. Thats right, first turn and there is a lumbering Abomination on the board.

Zombicide! First turn and an Abomination turns up....
I must admit that I was arguing for a re-draw at this stage but my gaming compadres are more adventourous than me and we formulated a cunning plan - we would stall the beast for as long as possible while we searched as madmen for the ingredients of a Molotov Cocktail - the only thing that can bring the beast down.

Zombicide! And the Abomination brought friends...
As if a first turn Abomination wasn't bad, he brought friends. A couple of fatties also turned up during the next few turns. And we couldn't find any of the needed ingredients. Things were looking bleak. Very bleak.

Zombicide! The Zombies start piling up while the heroes search for a Molotov Cocktail
The next turns consisted in frantic searches while the Abomination and his friends came closer and closer.
When there was no further obtions, Amy volunteered to stay in the building and lure the Abomination even further in, while the other heroes would make a break for it and attempt to find the needed ingredients elsewhere... Brave Amy.
Zombicide! The brave survivors attempt to escape, while Amy faces the Abomination
Led by Nick, who slaughtered multiple zombies with his machetes, the survivors made a succesful break out of the cursed building.
Unfortunately, Nick quickly went down when the zombies somehow got even hungrier (the walkers gained an extra turn, which meant Nick, even though he was tough, was Zombie-snack).

Zombicide! Nick is down, and the survivors are an endangered species...
After several turns we finally managed to find and combine the ingredients and blew the abomination apart with a Molotov Cocktail.
Zombicide! The Abomination is finally killed with a Molotov Cocktail thrown by Amy
But by this stage, the board was full of zombies, the three survivors were seperated, and what mustn't happen, happened: Another, equally, scary Abomination arrives.
Zombicide! Another Abomination lumbers onto the board
Our brave survivors now face insurmountable odds and each face cinematic ends of their own:
Amy manages to fight her way through hordes of zombies but in the end she is surrounded and eaten while screaming for help.
Zombicide! Amy is surrounded
But the only survivor, Josh, is face to face with an Abomination and although he destroys countless zombies, it is only a question of seconds before the horde arrives and pulls him apart...
Zombicide! Josh, the last survivor, seconds before he is eaten by the horde of zombies

So, second game and everything went poorly - we must have had the worst possible draws during the first couple of rounds. The Abomination meant that we had to devote all available forces to searching for the Molotov ingredients, and thus we didn'øt even come close to finding all the objectives, or even begin to think about getting out.

And how did we judge the game experience based on this utter defeat? Well, to be honest, we loved it! Everyone had a blast and the cinematic moments were multiple.

This game rocks, even when you're losing. Thats a pretty good recommendation!.

Anyways, hope you enjoyed reading about our game (if you did feel free to say so in comment or leave a tip for the blogowner :-)), as we played another immediately there'll be another report up soonish...

All the best,

Kasper

Zombicide!: First playtest - Superb game!

Hello all,
Got to playtest the Zombicide! game yesterday evening with three friends and we were all  impressed bythe game.
I think we all (four players, of which three are very experienced board-gamers) rated the game near maximum - somewhere around the 9 out of 10 mark.

Zombicide Action! Game Play
A few random words of praise:
* The rules are succinct and easily read and remembered. Although I was the only one to have read the rules (twice) and we spent about half an hour goofing around and learning the rules, once the game began I don' think we needed to consult the rulebook more than four or five times. Pretty impressive. In addition, the nifty summary on the backside of the rules? Well, I had made a few copies but after the first turn noone needed to consult them anymore. Even more impressive. Very intuitive.
* The game itself flows smoothly, is quite frankly intense. Very intense! I read somewhere a review which described the game as cinematic, and it really did feel like watching a zombie-survivor horror film at times. Quite scary to see a horde of zombies shuffling down the street towards your few survivors.
* The board is brilliant - great design, brilliant details etc.
* Great variety within the game - plenty of different items and gadgets. The Survivors are very diverse - some are fighters others are more akin to scouts or gatherers. Some are better than others but that doesn't really trouble me.
* The missions seem to be very diverse as well, and all in all I think the game has excellent replay value - even without any future additions.
* The experience system is brilliant - great fun getting better skills and at the same time intimidating to watch more and more zombies enter the game (as the amount scales to the best player in the game).
* The whole idea and mechanics of the zombies being controlled by the game rules is great and works almost perfectly.

Zombicide Game Play

And a few minor irritations:
*Game length - although it was our first game, difficult mission etc the game appears to be just a bit too long to squeeze two games into a single evening of leisurely gaming. Although this might change with more experience etc. Also a turn limit might increase the pressure even more, which could be fun....
* Perhaps a bit too few "surprises" - Although deadly and nasty, I felt there was a bit too long between special event-cards - i.e. when zombies suddenly pop up from manhole-covers etc.
* We quickly became supremely well-equipped (Sniper rifles, dual SMGs, etc) sue to intensive searching and the Survivor Ned's special abilities. This somehow felt to have happened a bit too quickly.
* A bit too much "micro"-management e.g. swapping items between players to create perfect combinations - but perhaps we were a bit too cooperative in our attempts at surviving.
* Minor rule issues: e.g. that a molotov cocktail makes noise when it is thrown not when it explodes :-).

But, apart from these few comments we were very pleased with the entire experience and heartily recommend the game. And to paint the minis - made the game a lot more fun that the zombies were painted (btw, one 'tray' of zombies was fine until we came into the 'orange' danger level).

Anyways, I'm so glad I bought this game!

All the best,
Kasper
